If you are a Windows user, you might meet the error message “The action can’t be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program.” when deleting, moving a folder or a file.

As the error message says, you can’t delete or move a folder or a file if another program is using it. The problem is that you can’t find any program that is opening the file. This is a simple example of such situation. You upload some photos to your Facebook or Flickr account. You choose the files and press upload button. The uploading progress stops because there is an error and you have to try again. After finishing the upload, you can’t delete these photos and get this error message. You are confused because you don’t find any photo application (your browser in this situation) opening them.
To solve the problem, you have to find the application or process which is opening the file. This can be easily done with the help of Process Explorer.

Just open the Process Explorer, click on Find menu and then Find Handle or DLL (or press CTRL + F) to open the search window. Enter the folder or file name and press Search button. You will see the process or application that is opening it.

Process Explorer is small and free. You don’t need to install to use it. Good luck!
